This second edition, like the first, was written by Jack Fischel, who has drawn on decades of experience as a teacher, lecturer, writer, editor, and organizer of conferences relating to the Holocaust. The bibliography now includes more titles and indicates useful resources on the Web and in cinematic form. Some of these make the wartime events more explicit, if not comprehensible, while others demonstrate clearly that this is not an issue that can simply be relegated to the past, that it is necessary to refute spurious claims even today.

The introduction and chronology have been brought up-to-date, and there are many new entries in the dictionary section. This second edition builds on an already impressive and well-received first edition by adding to all parts of the book. And the book includes a comprehensive bibliography that allows the reader to pursue aspects of the Nazi genocide under specific categories. The progression of the Holocaust is shown in the chronology. The background is presented in an extensive introduction, and detailed aspects involving persons, place, events, and organizations are covered in the dictionary entries. This is not the only reference work on the Holocaust, but it has many useful features. Moreover, it takes into account many of the residual unresolved issues of the Holocaust up to the present and shows that there are still many loose ends, even after all this time. The dictionary’s purpose is to inform, and it covers the subject broadly and objectively. Even this straightforward account of who did what and when, who did not react and why, and consequently how many persons (Jews and others) died or suffered makes for grisly and painful reading. This Historical Dictionary of the Holocaust is another reminder of what happened to the Jews and other victims of Nazi Germany’s genocidal policies. More insidiously, a vicious effort is being made in limited circles to deny the Holocaust. Yet, more than half a century later, there is a tendency to forget-if not to relativize-the Nazi extermination campaign against the Jews.
